Cell Phone Towers and Mobile Phone Masts - Beacons of Harm

Is it a cactus? A palm tree? A water tower? No! It's a cell phone tower! That's right! Cell phone towers today are being disguised in subtle ways unheard of just a few years ago. See a grain silo? Or a church steeple? You guessed it. It could very well be a cell phone tower. There's even a cell phone tower that looks just like a lighthouse...never mind that it's over two miles from the ocean.

Tv Mounts

But don't let the pretty and ingenious disguises fool you. There is a real and present danger lurking behind the mask of these innocent designs.

Tv Mounts

Why the disguises? Obviously, for aesthetic reasons. The cell phone companies don't want to make their neighborhood friends upset. They want to blend in. So they blend in while they blast your home and neighborhood with toxic electromagnetic radiation.

Cell phone towers, sometimes called masts, or mobile phone towers, weren't an issue years ago when they were few and far between. One could often drive miles and miles through the countryside and never see one. They were few in number and were only found in obscure locations and seen only on an occasional hilltop. Today cell phone towers have increased dramatically in number. There are now more than 1.9 million cell phone towers and antenna towers spread throughout the U.S. They are now found on churches, schools and firehouses as well as being seen on the rooftop of buildings everywhere. Did you know there is even a cell phone tower near Old Faithful in Yellowstone Park? Can't sleep well at night? It may be that there's a cell phone tower close by.

Just why would a mobile phone tower be placed on a church, school or firehouse? Why would school boards and churches agree to this? Money. It's that simple. The mobile phone companies will pay these organizations, and individual property owners, handsomely to install their equipment on their properties. This "rent money" can range from a few hundred dollars a month to several thousand dollars a month. What school district or church couldn't use extra money to aid a struggling budget? By "renting" the space on an already-constructed building the cell phone industry doesn't have to purchase land, build a tower or construct a new building. It simply mounts its equipment on a structure that already exists. It's a win-win deal for the cell phone company and the new 'landlord.'

Opposition to these cell tower installments used to gone unnoticed and without question. Not so today. Neighborhoods and citizens are becoming vocally opposed. But it's not the esthetics that causes residents and property owners to oppose these structures. Communities and citizens are afraid of the potential health effects being caused by this technology as well as the adverse affect on property values.

We Can't Stop Cell Phone Tower Construction

Unfortunately, there isn't much one can do to stop the proliferation and continued build out of cell phone towers and structures. Although thought to be legislation about deregulation issues, the Telecommunications Act of 1996 (TCA) was really an open invitation for the cell phone industry to place their towers anywhere they wanted. Section 704 of the TCA basically states that local authorities can't ban the placement of towers in their jurisdictions. The law says: "No State or local government or instrumentality thereof may regulate the placement, construction, and modification of personal wireless service facilities on the basis of the environmental effects of radio frequency emissions to the extent that such facilities comply with the Commission's regulations concerning such emissions." So legally the local government can't refuse the construction of a cell phone tower in your neighborhood! Any challenge by local communities could easily end up in federal court. Our lawmakers have basically given the cell phone industry free reign to install these towers wherever they want. And, by the way, the cell phone industry helped write this legislation that our government officials passed as law! The public, therefore, now has no voice and no vote. Is there something wrong with this picture? Why didn't our public officials represent the people instead of big business? Why would you let the very industry you're trying to regulate write it's own laws?

Does the income outweigh the potential risks? It appears not. Scores of studies and well-respected research have exposed alarming health effects from various forms of cancer to stress. Many experts today are predicting an epidemic in brain cancer soon.

Representatives from the industry are quick to point out the microwaves emitted by cell phone towers are well below federal standards. And indeed they may be. At least on paper. Most towers operate at a power output of 100 watts. However, this isn't the total wattage of the tower. What they aren't telling you is that 100 watts is the power per channel. Since one tower may have dozens of channels you can see that the power output could be highly excessive and well beyond 100 watts. It's a technical loophole. And, of course, who is monitoring the power output from these towers after they are erected? The FCC certainly isn't. It doesn't have the manpower or money to properly regulate the millions of towers and antennas now online. And who is to prevent these companies from turning up the wattage when no one is around? Some have reported that many of these towers have already shown power outputs in the 900 to 1000 watt range.

You Can't Escape The Radiation. It's Everywhere.

We simply can't escape the exposure to this radiation. It's everywhere. There are so many people using cell phones and wireless connections today that you don't even have to own a cell phone to be exposed. You're just as exposed as everyone else. Every time someone makes a call from a mobile phone the signal is sent to a cell phone tower. There are so many calls being made by everyone all around us and now there are so many mobile phone towers in operation, that all of us are caught in the crossfire. It's like second-hand smoke from cigarettes, except that we can't get away from it. There simply isn't anywhere to escape.

How Mobile Phone Towers Work

Cell phone towers emit signals in a "flower petal" pattern around the tower. This 360-degree radius around the tower is called a "cell" and this is what the term "cell" in cell phone means. When your phone is in a "cell" you get good reception and when it isn't in a?"cell" you get poor reception. So, for a cell phone company to provide complete coverage cell phone towers and antenna towers must be positioned all across the country so that the "cells" overlap. You can begin to see what a huge infrastructure needs to be created to provide complete cell phone coverage. That's why cell phone towers and antenna towers are so prevalent. Furthermore, that's why these antennas are installed in so many places like rooftops, fire stations, schools and churches. This is what is necessary for complete coverage.

Studies Show Adverse Health Effects From Cell Phone Towers

If you aren't sure that cell phone towers and masts are harmful the following study summaries should convince you. Below are listed six studies that have shown significant adverse health effects on people living near cell phone towers. According to Dr. Grahame Blackwell "these are the only studies known that specifically consider the effects of masts on people. All six studies show clear and significant ill-health effects. There are no known studies relating to health effects of masts that do not show such ill-health effects."

Santini et al. found significant health problems in people living within 300 meters of a cell phone base station or tower. The recommendation was made from the study that cell phone base stations should not be placed closer than 300 meters to populated areas. Pathol Biol (Paris) 2002; 50: 369-373. A Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research study entitled, "Effects of Global Communications System Radio-Frequency Fields On Well Being and Cognitive Function of Human Subjects With and Without Subjective Complaints" found significant effects on well being including headaches, muscle fatigue, pain, and dizziness from tower emissions well below the "safety" level. Gerd, Enrique, Manuel, Ceferino and Claludio conducted a Spanish study called "The Microwave Syndrome" and found adverse health effects from those living near two cell phone base stations. The health effects included fatigue, a tendency toward depression, sleeping disorders, difficulty in concentration and cardiovascular problems. From an Israeli study published in the International Journal of Cancer Prevention, Vol. 1, No. 2, April 2004, Wolf and Wolf reported a fourfold increase in the incidence of cancer in people living within 350 meters of a cell phone tower as compared to the Israeli general population. They also reported a tenfold increase specifically among women. In the Naila Study from Germany, November 2004, five medical doctors collaborated to assess the risk to people living near a cell phone tower. The retrospective study was taken from patient case histories between 1994 and 2004 from those who had lived during the past ten years at a distance up to 400 meters from the tower site. The results showed that the proportion of newly developed cancer cases was significantly higher in those patients living within the 400-meter distance and that the patients became ill on average eight years earlier. In the years 1999 to 2004, after five years of operation of the transmitting tower, the relative risk of getting cancer had trebled for residents of the area in the proximity of the installation compared to the inhabitants of Naila outside the area. An Austrian Study released in May 2005, showed that radiation from a cell phone tower at a distance of 80 meters causes significant changes of the electrical currents in the brains of test subjects. All test subjects indicated they felt unwell during the radiation and some reported being seriously ill. According to the scientists doing the study, this is the first worldwide proof of significant changes of the electrical currents in the brain, as measured by EEG, by a cell phone base station at a distance of 80 meters. Subjects reported symptoms such as buzzing in the head, tinnitus, palpitations of the heart, lightheadedness, anxiety, shortness of breath, nervousness, agitation, headache, heat sensation and depression. According to scientists this is the first proof that electrical circuits in the brain are significantly affected by a cell phone tower. The distance in this study was a mere 80 meters.

Two-time Nobel Prize nominee Dr. Gerald Hyland, a physicist, had this to say about mobile phone towers. "Existing safety guidelines for cell phone towers are completely inadequate. Quite justifiably, the public remains skeptical of attempts by governments and industry to reassure them that all is well, particularly given the unethical way in which they often operate symbiotically so as to promote their own vested interests."

Dr. Bruce Hocking did a study in Syndey, Australia, of children living near TV and FM broadcast towers, which by the way, are very similar to cell phone towers. He found that these children had more than twice the rate of leukemia as children living more than seven miles away from these towers.

Results in yet another recent study conducted on inhabitants living near or under a mobile phone base station antenna yielded the following prevalence of neuropsychiatric complaints: headache (23.5%), memory changes (28.2%), dizziness (18.8%), tremors (9.4%), depressive symptoms (21.7%), and sleep disturbances(23.5%). In this study the participants were given a neurobehavioral test battery measuring such things as problem solving, visuomotor speed, attention andmemory. Symptoms of exposed inhabitants were significantly higher than control groups.

Furthermore, Europe's top environmental watchdog group, European Environment Agency (EEA), is calling for immediate action to reduce exposure to mobile phone masts. EEA suggests action to reduce exposure immediately to vulnerable groups such as children.

The development of brain tumors in staff members working in a building in Melbourne, Australia, prompted the closing of the top floors of the building. The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology is housed in the building. Seven staff members were diagnosed with brain tumors and five of the seven worked on the top floor. A cell phone antenna is located on the roof of the building.

The Orange phone company in England is being forced to remove its mast tower on a building in Bristol, England. The removal is a result of a five-year effort by residents and local authorities to have the mast removed. Cancer rates in the building, which has become known internationally as the "Tower of Doom," have soared to ten times the national average for the 110 residents living there. The two masts sitting on the roof, one owned by Orange and the other by Vodafone, were installed in 1994. Vodafone has refused the remove its mast.

Cell Phone Towers Affect Animals

Animals aren't exempt from exposure the cell phone tower radiation either. One veterinary school in Hanover, Germany, reports that dairy cows kept in close proximity to a cell phone tower for two years had a reduction in milk production in addition to other health problems including abnormal behavior patterns.

Firefighters Vote To Suspend Cell Tower Construction On Fire Stations

Concerned about the effect that masts have on the nation's firefighters, The International Association of Fire Fighters voted in 2004 to voice its opposition to cell phone towers and antennas being place on and around fire stations. They want proof first that there isn't a safety issue and have asked for a moratorium on further construction and placement of any more towers or antennas on or around firehouses until such a study can be conducted.

What Are These Antennas Doing To Our Kids While They're In School?'t worth the risk. They should not be subjected to microwave radiation when science has proven there could clearly be devastating effects as outlined in the previously mentioned studies. School boards and parent organizations need to be aware of the inherent dangers from such an exposure. It's been clearly shown that microwave radiation penetrates the head of a child much easier than that of an adult. This is due to the thinner and softer bones in the head of child. Skull bones don't fully harden until about age 22.

How Many Cell Phone Towers Are Near You?

The average person lives within one-half mile of a cell phone tower. Have you ever wondered how close you live or work to one of these towers? Would it bother you if one were right in your backyard? How many of these towers and antennas do you think there are in your immediate area? Find out by visiting the website http://www.antennasearch.com/. Simply type in your address and you'll get a listing and a map of all the towers and antennas within a short radius of your address. Like most people you'll probably gasp when you see the numbers. These towers are literally everywhere. Hundreds and hundreds of them are probably located within a few miles of your home or office.

Watch The Signal Bars On Your Cell Phone

The signal bars on your cell phone tell you how strong the signal is that are connecting to your cell phone. In other words, the closer you are to a cell phone tower the stronger the signal. The stronger the signal the less power your phone has to use to maintain the connection. A strong signal is indicated by a full set of "bars" showing on your cell phone display. Fewer bars mean a weaker signal. A weaker signal means the cell phone has to work harder to maintain the signal. Consequently, more power is needed to maintain the connection. The more power needed the greater the amount of radiation produced by your phone and the greater exposure to you. So always try to talk in outdoors or in an open space. This allows an easier connection from your cell phone to the nearest cell phone tower. Your phone won't have to work as hard and less power is used to maintain the signal, which translates, to less radiation exposure for you.

What Can We Do?

Obviously, can't escape the exposure. We've established that fact. So what can we do to minimize the damage?

Here are few ideas: We need to limit our exposure any way possible. Don't live near a cell phone tower if you have a choice. Don't buy a home near one even if the price is right. Limit your use of wireless devices. Go back to 'wired' connections whenever possible. Maximize your health through proper nutrition and good hydration. Eat foods high in antioxidants and take supplements. Eat organically as much as possible. There is no safe distance to locate away from a mast tower. Obviously, the closer to the tower the greater the exposure risk so do locate as far away as possible. Whenever possible encourage your local government officials to consider transitioning to the use of fiber optic cable. Most of it has already been laid underground. It's just not being used. There are no masts with fiber optics and the small amount of radiation at the exits can be neutralized with technology now available. Discourage the use of Wi-Fi in schools by meeting with your school officials and school boards. Wi-Fi hotspots are popping up everywhere now. Even whole cities are going wireless with the installation of Wi-Fi. Again, it's all done through a wireless signal, which is damaging to your health. Don't let cell phone companies install cell phone antennas on the roofs of schools where your children attend. The radio waves are disruptive to their ability to focus, not to mention the health hazards we've already outlined. If you can't change your current situation there is some hope. There are some intervention devices now available that you can use in your home, school and office to help lessen the risk of exposure. Some very good cutting-edge technology has been developed that will intervene and help mitigate the damage being done by wireless connections.

If you'd like to discuss those options feel free to get in touch with me.

Upgrade Your RV With LED Lighting

If you do a lot of boondocking (no hookups while camping), then you know battery life is one of the most important things you must plan for, especially if you have a small battery bank. One great way to save a lot of power is to convert your existing incandescent lighting to LED lighting. LED stands for light emitting diode and provides light in a very different way than incandescent or fluorescent lighting sources. The biggest benefit for a boondocker is that LEDs require very little power to operate, so you won't have to be so conscious of switching off lights when you don't need them.

Tv Mounts

Just how much power can you save by going LED? In a typical travel trailer of say 27 feet with a super slide and a couple of bunk beds, you may have upwards of 20+ 12 watt incandescent bulbs. If you were to have all of these on at one time, you would be drawing around 20 amps of DC power. In a few hours, your single group 24 12-volt battery would be near dead. Even if you had two batteries, you wouldn't have much left to finish out a 2-day weekend without a battery recharge.

Tv Mounts

Now if you were to replace every interior incandescent bulb in this fictitious travel trailer with a 24 LED array warm color lamp, each drawing 190 mA, the total power consumption drops to 3.8 amps, over 5 times less power consumption. You wouldn't likely replace every incandescent bulb with a 24 LED array lamp but you could and if you did, you would be using 5 times less power, even if you had every light switched on.

There are several different routes you can take when doing the LED lighting mod: individual lights, such as a night or reading light, all or some interior lights, interior and exterior, storage compartments, etc. Much will depend on you budget and coolness factor you are trying to achieve. Replacing every incandescent bulb may just break your piggy bank, but doing a few can still help save some battery power.

Using a single LED for a night light, like in the bathroom, can be a real life saver. Well, it may not save your life but if you have to get up at 2am to go, you won't be blinded by the light and you should be able to go right back to sleep. A single LED connected through a SPST toggle switch mounted on the bathroom light fixture can provide just enough light to do your business.

Perhaps you just want to change a few lights out, like the lights over your bed, that are generally too bright to read by. There are direct replacement LED lamps that require no modification to the lighting fixture, other than swapping bulbs. For this type of LED lamp, use the "warm white" type. The cool white LEDs provide a bluish tint to the light color and may not appeal to your reading tastes. The warm white LEDs provide a yellowish light color very similar to that of a normal incandescent bulb.

If you plan on replacing the main lights inside the RV and have the type of fixtures that contain two bulbs with a switch in the middle, you can replace just one of the bulbs to reduce cost. This way you not only save money, but you also can still provide more light when you need it by switching on the second bulb. For this case, you should consider LEDs that have a wide beam angle, at least 120 degrees. This is the angle at which light is projected from the lamp. The wider the better if you're trying to light up a large area. These lamps are typically configured in a flat package with many LEDs, as many as 36 in some cases. They simply affix to the fixture with Velcro and plug in just like a standard bulb.

Another cool LED mod is to fit a LED rope light under your RVs countertop. Many upscale RVs have this feature as a standard option but there is no reason you can't have this classy look either. First, have someone help you test fit the rope for length, ensuring you have enough for the whole countertop. Then get some double-sided tape and stick it to the cabinet or under the countertop where you want the rope to run. If you have any left over rope, drill a hole the size of the rope's diameter and run the excess through the hole. Just stick the rope to the tape and press firmly. You can also add a switch to control the rope power as well.

A step light is also another easy LED mod that consumes very little power. If you forget to turn it off, you don't have to worry since it can be on for days and still be easy on your battery. You can use a courtesy light or an amber side marker light. These mount with a couple of screws to the underside of the stairwell. Power can be run to an inconspicuous switch inside. Some even have light sensors so they can automatically turn on when it gets dark and turn off in the morning.

Outside compartments are also a great candidate for LED lights. These can be powered through a pin switch so that when you open the compartment door, the light turns on, and then off when you close the door. The color of the LED light is not so important as is the placement of the light. Compartments are usually rectangular in shape, so try and place the LEDs near the corners of the compartment. This way, you will get the most light to all parts of the storage area.

Finally, upgrading your RVs exterior lighting can make for a very clean look as well as improve safety going to the road. LED porch, marker, clearance, backup, turn, and running lights are all candidates for LED replacement. Fortunately for you, many companies, like Bargman for example, now make direct replacement fixtures that include everything you need to perform the upgrade. Just be sure to budget enough since total exterior lighting replacement can run in to the hundreds of dollars.

Tip: LED brake/tail lamps may not work with some older thermal flasher units found on some vehicles. An LED brake/tail lamp will require an electronic flasher/blinker unit which is commonly available at your local auto parts store. Just ask for the electronic equivalent of your thermal flasher.

The Ku Klux Klan - Begins in 1866

This article recounts the history of the Invisible Empire, Also known by their initials, and with their name being touted as the "sound of a rifle being cocked," the Ku Klux Klan is the name of several related organizations in the United States that have advocated white supremacy, antisemitism, anti-Catholicism, racism, homophobia, anti-Communism and nativism - hatred of those not born in our country.

Tv Mounts

As a group, the KKK has used terrorism, violence, and acts of intimidation such as cross burning and lynching to oppress mostly African-Americans, and also other social, religious and ethnic groups. Due to their illegal actions, about a century later they were the "victims" of government infiltration, as ordered by FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover through the feds in the 1960s. The Bureau in Birmingham, Alabama especially used this tactic, along with playing "head games" with them, to factionalize some local Alabama klans. But the Ku Klux Klan remains somewhat prevalent in America to this very day.

Tv Mounts

This weird group of loosely knit white racial cultists actually existed in about three stages. The first one came about after the Civil War, when local government in the South was still weak or nonexistent, and fears of a black insurrection caused informal vigilante organizations to be formed in most southern communities. They were soon linked together in societies, such as the Men of Justice, the Pale Faces, the Constitutional Union Guards, the White Brotherhood and the Order of the White Rose. Finally, some rich white southerners who had fought in the Civil War got an idea.

In Pulaski, Tennessee, May of 1866, they took the name Ku Klux Klan, probably after the Greek word for circle, "kuklos," as these landowning southerners were a small circle of cronies with vested interests in maintaining slavery - or attempting its re-institution. These ex-Confederates were largely trying to oppose the Reconstruction policies of the radical Republican Congress in order to maintain "white supremacy." The Klan, being more fueled monetarily, became the most popular of the post-defeat organizations, and eventually absorbed all of the smaller groups.

The Klan had a major impact as it attempted to recruit members. It had a kind of "romantic" attraction to it, with its strange disguises, its silent parades, its midnight rides, and its self-contained mysterious internal "language" and commands, which were all found to be effective in playing upon people's fears and superstitions - at least at first. You were considered genuinely "white" if you joined it, and it also contained the markings of a paramilitary organization of the time, having been formed up by ex-Confederate soldiers.

Using horses, their riders muffled their hooves and also covered their mounts with white robes. The masked men wore long, flowing white sheets, with their faces covered with white masks, and they kept skulls on their saddle horns. Basically, their plan was to pose as the returned Confederate dead, in order to "haunt" people with guilt, and to use terror tactics to keep blacks "in their place."

The Klan usually was able to achieve its goals through terror alone, but whipping, lynching and even tar-and-feathering were also freely used, not only against blacks, but against the northern-born "carpetbaggers" and "scalawags" or "scallywags" who inhabited the South during the period of Reconstruction. Carpetbaggers were northerners who journeyed to the South for financial opportunity's sake, and scallywags were southerners who joined the Republican Party in the South. The Republicans were helping with Reconstruction, so they were particularly hated.

The advent of Radical Reconstruction brought on major changes in the southern way of life. With the northern military enforcing their rule, and the desire to make over the South in the image of the North, individuals began finding ways to take advantage of the weakened South, sometimes through commerce and sometimes through taking over government seats. Now that freedmen were able to vote, Republicans were winning elections in states where only a few years before, it had been illegal to be a Republican.

They began to be a major political party in the Democratic South. Some Democratic Party leaders denied civil rights, and most of its southern members refused to take the Oath of Loyalty to the flag of the United States, but they were helpless to stop the new "foreign" government. These were the days before the party names got switched around, with the Democrats becoming the Republicans and the Republicans being renamed the Democratic Party. Southern Democrats are still a potent force in the South nowadays.

Pretty soon, there were Republican governors and congressmen, some of whom were even black men. But the carpetbaggers, or white northerners who went south to help rebuild the reunified nation, were often only conmen opportunists trying to make a fortune off of postwar woes, and so all carpetbaggers were hated and loathed by southerners. However, far worse hatred was reserved for the scallywags, who were southerners who had become Republican, resulting in sporadic acts of violence.

The South couldn't do much about the northern-born carpetbaggers, as they would then face reprisals from the Union soldiers who were keeping close watch on them, but they occasionally attacked them - also venting their fury on the scallywags. This other group tended to be from the lower classes, and this infuriated the southerners in the middle and upper classes who no longer had their civil rights.

They were impoverished and struggling to survive, as in the portrayal of Scarlett O'Hara at the end of 1939's "Gone With the Wind." Now southern hatred was becoming even more intense, and whites were keen on taking vengeance, especially against blacks - and also nearly anyone white from the North. This really fueled the start of the Ku Klux Klan, which attempted to foster this hatred, helping them to recruit more members. About one hundred years later, if you were a northerner, you ran into this attitude the instant you set foot in Birmingham, simply by walking down the street. You would have encountered lots of "hate staring," the act of looking at someone silently with a gaze scathing with the utmost hatred, until you entered a building.

The general organization of the local klans, later called klaverns, began in April of 1867 in Nashville, Tennessee. General N.B. Forrest, the famous Confederate cavalry leader, was made Grand Wizard of the Invisible Empire. He was to be assisted by ten Genii, and each southern state constituted a Realm under a Grand Dragon, with eight Hydras staffing them. Several counties would form a Dominion controlled by a Grand Titan and six Furies. A county was a Province ruled by a Grand Dragon and four Night Hawks. And the local Den was governed by a Grand Cyclops, with two Night Hawks as aides, while each individual member was to be called a Ghoul. Anyone have a pumpkin to carve? This sounds like Halloween to me, but these people took it all very seriously.

But their internal organization was unkempt, in spite of their attempts to keep it together through all of the above assignations. Their control over their local Dens was loose, and reckless local leaders lawlessly committed acts that their leaders couldn't control. General Forrest finally ordered the disbanding of the Klan in 1869, being apprehensive of the type of power it was usually exhibiting.

Local organizations continued, some for many years, as the KKK was effective in systematically keeping black men away from the polls. This helped ex-Confederates regain political control in many states. But Congress in 1870 and 1871 passed legislation against the Klan. President Ulysses S. Grant, who led the Union forces during the Civil War, signed the Civil Rights Act of 1871. It was also called the Ku Klux Klan Act, and was designed to end it. But the KKK re-manifested itself several times.

Infrared Wildlife Cameras - Trail Cameras Give a Fascinating Insight Into Wildlife Activity

Infra Red Wildlife trail cameras can provide a fascinating insight into the nocturnal and daytime movements of elusive species such as otter, deer, foxes and red squirrels.

Tv Mounts

Infrared trail cameras are essentially mobile digital cameras which have a motion detection system that detects a human or animal intruder into an area, and triggers a camera which takes either a series of still images, or video footage.

Tv Mounts

Primarily designed for hunters to scout deer patterns in a hunting zone, these cameras are now more and more used for wildlife observation.

BBC Countryfile recently featured their Stealth Cam Prowler HD infra red scouting camera, showing how they can be used to great effect to capture footage of elusive animals such as river otters and badgers.

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show coverage on BBC also recommends the use of these infra red cameras for people looking to see who or what is lurking around their garden at night, and suggested they are particularly useful for capturing footage of the nocturnal movements of the badger.

Infrared and incandescent wildlife cameras

Some trail cameras are equipped with an incandescent flash which works similar to a home compact camera. This flash although powerful, should not be used when capturing footage of nocturnal animals as a bright flash can often scare and disorientate the animal causing injury, and also attract unwanted attention from humans who may steal the camera.

The Spypoint infrared cameras and Stealth Cam Prowler HD trail cameras feature a Stealth IR system which uses a series of high power infra red LED emitters to illuminate the subject some distance in front of the camera.

These infrared cameras are invisible to the human and animal eye, and will take either still or video footage in complete darkness without alerting the subject to the fact it is on camera.

Which Trail Camera

There are so many wildlife cameras on the market today, it's often difficult to decide which is the best for you.

It really depends on a few different factors, but we have listed the most popular with their essential differences.

Most modern trail cameras utilise the SD memory card format and have their own built in, limited, storage capacity.

We recommend the SanDisk memory cards, and a capacity of 4Gb or more.

These memory cards can be swapped over on location, and the footage downloaded to your laptop when you get home for review.

Some cameras feature a LCD screen to review captured footage and this is ideal for on location checking of what the camera has captured.

Stealth Cam Prowler HD

This camera is the ultimate High Definition video camera, and is the perfect choice for obtaining high quality video footage in 1080P High Definition and also captures sound, so you can hear conversation and/or movement through foliage.

It uses a stealth infra red combined with an 8MP camera to capture high quality still footage.

The Prowler HD is the most popular trail camera for wildlife trusts as they often like to play back footage in visitor centres, or at meetings.

Spypoint PRO X

The Pro X from Spypoint is the ultimate still image camera, and features a 12MP CCD to capture ultra high quality still shots. It also captures video with sound but although not HD, we think it is fantastic quality, with rich colours, depth of field and detail.

PRO X also has a built in LCD screen for watching captured footage and is ideal for on location reviewing of what the camera trap has captured.

It also operates with a High Power Infrared emitter but has the most sensitive detection of any trail camera we have experienced.

The Stealth Cam Prowler uses a PIR detector to capture movement, but the PRO X goes a step further with a motion detector and a heat signature detector. This not only makes the Pro X ultra sensitive, but it means less false alarms as the unit will only trigger when it detects a real target, and means less false alarms with branches of trees moving near the sensor etc.

The Pro X as with all the IR/B and IR/C, can be powered by a 12V or Lithium battery pack for when you may need to leave your camera unattended for extended periods.

SpyPoint IR/A and IR/B Trail Camera

We think the Spypoint IR/B is the best allround trail camera for wildlife monitoring. It provides high quality still shots from the high resolution CCD camera, and also provides video footage in black and white at night, and colour during the day.

Using an Infra Red IR emitter, the subject never knows its photo has been taken.

Prostalk 2MP Nature Camera

The Prostalk series of trail cameras are ultra small, and ideal for locations where the camera needs to be hidden.

A low resolution however means that the images are not the best, but it's ideal for security footage or for reviewing animal movements without needing high res images for publishing.

Setting up your Infra red wildlife camera

Location really depends on the level of security your camera will need to have. If the device is on your own ground, or garden, then placing it on a tree trunk or even in a bush, will be adequate.

However if you are scouting for wildlife in an area that is visited by the public you may need to secure the camera using a security cable kit, or mount it high enough out of reach, but remember to angle the camera down to the level you wish to capture.

No point capturing birds flying past and seeing a nice bit of sky instead of the badger eating grubs below!

The Spypoint trail cameras have an adjustable detection zone which is ideal for capturing footage of animals likely to walk close by or far away from the camera.

This is crucial in a situation where you have wildlife on a path approx 15meters away, and you have vehicles on a road approx 25meters away. You do not want to trigger the camera every time a bus goes past, but you don't want to miss out on the badger at night snuffling up the trail.

When placing your camera it's crucial you test out the detection before leaving the camera to capture wildlife. The Spypoint and Stealth Cam wildlife cameras both have test modes, where you can set the camera, and then walk about in front of the camera in the area you feel is most likely to get animal traffic.

I use my labrador pup as a bit of a "test dog". By simply leaving a few dog biscuits on the trail, I set her off to find them and watch that the camera picks up movement. My theory is a small lab pup is a more realistic target than a 15stone human.

Once you know the camera is detecting the zone you wish to capture, you need to think about what type of footage you need.

A series of still shots can be fired off, or a video of a variable duration. You can also set a time delay between triggers, so that you can have as little or as much footage as you like.

A customer of ours who monitors badger growth finds it handy to scatter a few raisins in front of the camera, and she records footage of the badgers as a video clip, and then has plenty of time to review the footage and record any data she needs.

Whatever camera you decide to go for, it's amazing just what goes on at the bottom of your garden whilst you are asleep.

We have seen lots of amazing footage from bears to badgers, and wolves to window cleaners, and even some footage from the USA captured on a Prowler HD which is mind boggling, could it really be bigfoot......?

Enjoy using your Trail Camera, and look out for the many online "best trail camera photo" competitions.
